The winners of the 79th edition of the Galata-Varna swimming marathon are from the sea capital. In the men’s swimming marathon first at the Pier No.2 finished Georgi Tsurev, he stopped the chronometers at 49.59 minutes. His teammate from club Ästery”  – Vasiliky Kadoglu won the grand prize at the ladies with a time of 56.05 minutes. 268 people participated in the marathon.

Swimmers from 9 countries took part in the oldest swimming competition in Bulgaria. In addition to our competitors, marathon swimmers from Russia, Ukraine, Belgium, Turkey, Denmark, England, the Netherlands and Moldova started swimming along the 4-kilometer route. Men’s and women’s first to sixth prize winners, as well as the best performing Varna residents, disabled swimmer and marathon swimmer who registered the most participations in this marathon, shared an award fund of BGN 6800.

The organizers of the marathon are the Naval Forces of the Republic of Bulgaria, Varna Municipality and the PSC “Black Sea”. The event is carried out with the exclusive assistance of the Maritime Administration, Varna Port, Maritime Station, Varna Public Transport Ltd., Medical Center for Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine, BRC, Municipal Police, Regional Directorate of the Ministry of Interior, Border Police, Directorate-General for Emergency and Rescue Activities and Naval School ” N. J. Vaptsarov “. For the first time in the 79-year history of the Galata – Varna swimming marathon, the start was from the beach “Karantina”.

 

Radostin Krastev (Sandanski, 50.03) finished second in the men’s ranking, followed by – Nikola Savatinov (Plovdiv, 50.04), Georgi Kolev (Plovdiv, 50.05), Arseniy Beketov (Varna, 50.07) and Todor Todorov (52.26). For women, the second is Gabriela Georgieva (Sofia, 1,03.41), followed by Ivet Shumkova (Varna, 1,05.48), Alexandra Ruseva (PSC Black Sea-Varna, 1,06.24), Stilina Ivanova (PSC Black Sea) -Varna, 1,07.19) and Alexander Vachkov (1,13.03).
The oldest swimming race in Bulgaria this year was part of the initiative “Varna – European Sport City 2019”. The event was under the patronage of the Minister of Youth and Sports Krasen Kralev, who applauded the participants.

The organizing committee is chaired by the Mayor of Varna Ivan Portnih. The marathon judge at sea was a captain I rank Kamen Kukurov – Chief of Staff of the Navy. The chief judge of Galata-Varna is Vili Tsekov.

 

In the rewarding ceremony participated Rear Admiral Kiril Mihaylov, Naval Commander, Governor Stoyan Pasev, Head of the Municipal Directorate of Sport Christian Dimitrov, the famous swimmer Petar Stoychev, deputy chairman of the swimming champion of Bulgaria SC “Cherno more” Mirolyub Adamov, the director of the sports school “Georgi Benkovski” – Evelina Yancheva and the Dobri Dinev’s wife – Margarita Dineva. Olympic boxing champion Ivaylo Marinov is also present.

Among the successful finishers was Philip Rombout, president of the champion PSC “Black Sea”, who traditionally takes part in the event.

 

Two members of the colorful Bulgarian family has swam the distance. They raises admiration for conquering mountain peaks in different parts of the planet and a lot of different adventures. While Jivko and Rein were swimming in the marathon, their charming wife and mother, Ralitsa Ginkova-Venkova, has clutching her thumbs for them. A few days before they arrived in Varna, they, along with their daughter Annabel, conquered Japan’s Mount Fuji (3776 m). They are already looking at the next challenge – a world-wide boat trip.

Individual awards were also presented during the official ceremony. The best swimmer from Varna Georgi Tzurev received the Dobri Dinev prize. Vasiliki Kadoglu was honored for best performing Varna resident. Omar Kanai from Turkey wins the disabled swimmer bonus. Miroslav Savov, on the other hand, won the prize for swimmer with the most number of participation in the marathon – 35 in total.

 

A lady from Dordrecht,  the sister city of Varna swimmed charity the distance.

The idea of the Dordrecht-Varna twinning foundation was to support the realization of a noble cause – building a canopy in the courtyard of a family-type accommodation center in the village of Topoli. Inhabitants of the house are children with disabilities.

Nearly 3,000 EUR were raised in the foundation’s bank account. The check was handed to the Head of Sport Directorate of Varna Municipality – Christian Dimitrov.
