One of Bulgaria’s most successful swimmers, Kalina Nikolaeva, a long-time competitor for the dominant Varna swimming club PSK Cherno More, will miss the 86th edition of the Galata–Varna Swimming Marathon, which will take place on 26 July.
The multiple champion and record holder is spending this summer in the United States, where she is completing a professional internship, and will therefore be unable to return to Varna to take part in the marathon.
“Unfortunately, I won’t be able to participate in this year’s marathon because I am in the United States completing my professional internship. So far, I have taken part in the Galata–Varna Marathon three times. For me, this event has always been something very special. It offers a unique experience, an incredible atmosphere, and a sense of pride in being part of such a wonderful tradition. Every race has left me with unforgettable memories,” Kalina shared.
Currently living in the United States, the accomplished Bulgarian swimmer, admired both for her sporting achievements and her graceful presence, is studying Recreation, Sport and Tourism. She will soon begin the fourth year of her studies at a university in Illinois.
“I wish all participants in the marathon the very best of luck! I hope to be back on the starting line next year,” Kalina said.
Last year, she claimed the women’s title at the Galata–Varna Marathon, crossing the finish line in 1:07:10.
The Varna-born swimmer has often spoken about what makes the event so special to her:
“As a pool swimmer, I postponed my first participation for quite some time because open-water swimming is completely different from swimming in a pool. My experience competing in longer and more demanding pool events gave me the confidence that I would be able to handle the marathon distance when I finally decided to take part.”
